totally agree mate

I have been standing up and having a go back at barrackers/hecklers since i was about 12

I am a Wolves fan, which explains a lot. my ex-brother-in-law punched a nasty heckler out at a game once. i think that was the moment my dad decided he was okay to be let into the family after all.

RE: Ian Westwood
Its funny how live sport inflames peoples temprement. I`ve seen several incidents over the years. The point where things become a worry is when kids can hear adult talk or see their actions. Many funny moments raise their head in games when there is interaction between the crowd and supporters, ones where the players actually appreciate the humour, so long may that sort continue.

What is your view on Ian Westwood at this stage of the season? It seems to me that his confidence is absolutely shot and he needs replacing in the Championship with immediate effect (with Clarke as stand-in captain). Do you agree?

Apologies for delayed respone.

Sort of two questions there.

I wouldn't replace him, no. I wouldn't have appointed him in the first place (I'd have stuck with Maddy) but, having appointed Westwood, I wouldn't change now. He's scored more runs than other specialist batsmen and I'm not sure there have been major issues with tactical mistakes. He does look exhausted, I agree, and he hasn't shown much ability to lift the side but I think he's been blamed for some of the faults of his colleagues. Just look at Troughton's first-class record for this season. Or Maddy's. They're appalling and, as senior players, they have to take some of the responsibility for this mess.

I don't think Clarke needs any distractions at the moment. I'm a big fan of Clarke but let's see him perform consistenly as an all-rounder before adding demands.

But... I still think the jury is out on whether Westwood is good enough at batting to be a professional cricketer. I'd definitely bring in a new captain from outside for next year. And I think they will.

Who? I'd try for Shah. I hear on the grapevine that's he's off to Surrey but I've no idea if it's true. Same with Malan. I'm pretty certain Morgan is not coming to Edgbaston, though. And, for a left field choice, how about Vikram Solanki. Yes, he's still in contract. But, having seen him and Worcs recently, something at that club has to give. He's an admirable character and a fine player (despite current problems). Stranger things have happened...

RE: Ian Westwood
Vikram's a nice chap but he always seemed very laidback to me-wonder if we need a more 'intense' couple of individuals? I think both him and Shah would be the right kind of profile in terms of players who are unlikely to be denied us through England commitments.

Thanks George. What a great web site by the way. PS That's a long running jury - you'd think there's an obvious verdict that could have been reached by now. In my opinion there's a big difference between the Troughton and Maddy underachievement examples you cite and Westwood. If nothing else they are multi-dimensional, proactive cricketers in all forms of the games whereas Westwood epitomises the over-cautious approach that is the default mode of Giles (eg. why on earth did Westwood sneak back into the 20/20 side and then go in at 5 in the QF - disastrous muddled thinking!)

Agree Shah would be good. Any views on the merits of going for Jefferson, Cross, Denly? Also Carberry who seems strangely out of favour at Hampshire and has a history of changing counties?
