Good to see that Jonathon has started the tour well top scoring with 85 in the first warm up match.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the reaction he receives when & if he makes a Test appearance & also how he handles it. 001_smile

I read today that, at the Oval, he was the first english player to make his debut with the ashes still on the line for 113 years!

So I think he will be more than fine (as long as he ignores the booing from Michael Vaughan in the TMS commentary box)

"Jonathan Trott does not hang around. It took him one game to establish himself in England's Test side. Now an innings of 85 in England"s tour-opening victory over Diamond Eagles will establish him in England's 50-over team, perhaps as an opener.

As Kevin Pietersen flies to South Africa on Monday, somebody will have to make way for him as soon as he has fully recovered from his Achilles injury. Joe Denly and Trott were the likely candidates – until Denly was yorked for three and Trott scored 85 from 104 balls to set up an overwhelming win.

It was not just the amount of Trott's runs, it was the assurance he exuded. He looked at home from the start, and not merely because he was in his native land.

"Everyone coming here has their goals and we are all working hard to contribute to the team," Trott said. "I want to perform and try to get myself in the one-day side, then think about the Tests afterwards. I don't want to be thinking of the importance of Test matches at this stage, this is just as important for us."

Opening the innings for England in 50-over cricket is not an option that Trott rejects: "At Warwickshire I've either batted at four or opened, but in one-day cricket you can be out there any time and it's all similar."

Although it was Trott's first innings in South Africa for his adopted country, he was not subjected to any special treatment. "No, no comments out there, I have played against a few of them before in county cricket and it was all right," said Trott.
